April 22, 1939 [Sr.] Dear N. C., Iowa State copped two games from Kay State this weekend. The last one which I did not get to see because of the Military Ball tonight, was broken up in the 10th inning when Jones of Iowa State smacked far enough into center field to enable him to circumnavigate the diamond before they retrieve the elusive little white pill. Perhaps this reminds you of a similar game twenty years ago last Tuesday at Missouri. I believe it was the 12th frame and one was on when hard-hitting Nile Kinnick lined one out of the park. If you are not reminded of this thrilling incident, then the D. M. Tribune has again made another slipup. Mid-quarter test start Monday and carry through Friday. That three point will not be evident at this time. However, I am still gunning for it. Somedays up here I feel that I am riding on the top crest, and other days in the trough. I keep thinking, boy when I get through this chem. and math. the sailing will be much easier and more interesting. Then, again I think, what the heck, why can't I get this like the other fellows are, and keep plugging but not a whole lot seems to come out of it. On the other hand I know the heads of my department already, and know them fairly well. They also know me, which is the more important. Another thing I am on the "Y" cabinet and am up for the Union Board. This is getting another early start on the activities which they consider highly important over here. I have been studying like a demon the past two weeks, and still do not know what I should about math and chem. If I can only get them up without putting so much time on them, I could enjoy myself and accomplish so many things that 1 want to do. There are unlimited possibilties here for all kinds of interests. I do not have the time now to tell you all about my experience last Friday afternoon, but I have found just the place, the books, the music, and the atmosphere where my hobby could be a truly valuable hobby in just a short time. Frederik and Ingrid visited the campus Friday noon and created quite a stir. I, of course, was on hand and was one of a couple thousand witnesses of a ceremony fit for royalty. Please notice the uniformed boy just to the left of the princess(he is saluting). Hdd this picture been taken as they went in the Union insteda of coming out, that saluting soldier would have been your middle son. Being this close I can say that the princess was very good looking and the prince was as big as they come. Chief Patrolman Knee was on hand to see that they got where the were going on time. He gave them some rapid rides, I guess. Gramdma sent me a check for $25 with a very nice letter last week. Theis will last me for quite awhile if not for the remaining portion of the year, excluding initiation fee. Love, Ben
