May 21.1939 Dear SB: Seems quite a spell since I have written to you; perhaps you have the same impression. And there won't be many more opportunities this year, as you will soon be among those present in the flesh as well as in spirit. I anticipate that this summer will be memorable in our family experience and I believe that all of us will make the most of it. The Iowa City boys at the office intimate that AFI is a distinct honor, tho the details seem rather obscure. We are pleased and shall be interested in learning more about it. This morning I interrupted Bill Waugh's lawn mowing with a little visit, and he told as that Bob was elected to the Innocents, and also to the office of president of the student body. Nice going Did you know that Bob broke his leg last winter? I didn't until a week or so ago. On the 31st of May I expect to be in Ames to attend the annual meeting of the Mortgage Bankers Soils Short Course, which has a second day program at Greenfield to inspect some soil erosion work. I am wondering what your plans may be for coming home. If it develops that you night be ready to come that week end, perhaps I culd arrange to get you with the car. Will you please give me the schedule as nearly as you can. Ben will complete his classes and exams until Friday the 9th of June. He is going East with Mr. Covert and plans to leave from Ames on the 10th. You, mother and I will be in Des Moines that day, for Association, as perhaps you know. We had a fine visit with Beulah Jo and Karl William last week, and they have new been back in Sunny Cal for ten days, nearly. There are quite a few little items of news that could go into this letter, if I had abit more time. Uncle Fred has come and gone; mother was back to see him, and probably Ben has told you of seeing him. I have bean playing golf for the last three Sunday mornings, and George and I played a match last Monday. He beat me one hole, so you see I am still an amateur. I have gone with several boys from the Bank to Harrison Field, and haven't been the last man every time. To-day it was 56 for nine. Didn't lose any balls and. hit the ball every time I swung at it. We should have a little fun this summer. I could use some instruction and considerable practice. Friday I was up to Turin again to help plant some corn hybrids. It was a swell day and the farm looks good. That certainly does expand my soul, and I do enjoy Bill Hussell. You must go up with me some time. That evening I west to a fish dinner at a cabin down on the Platte. Some of the Bank officers had been to Canada fishing, and they brought back some excellent trout. A variety of diversions was provided; horseshoes, beer bibbing, poker playing, conversation and then just simple sitting in the twilight over the river watching the fading sunset, followed by the twinkling lights of the village across on the opposite shore. Please let us know if there is any possibility of my visit to Iowa on the 31st and 1st coinciding with your homeward trek. Love Pop
