Ben G. Kinnick Thurs. 18, 1935 (When on the Western trip in 1935 Nile & Ben) Dear Folks, I am very sorry that we haven't written more promptly but we have been on the go from dawn till late at nite ever since we arrived at Haywards. From Denver, the last place we sent a card, we drove to Raton, N.M. The state police stopped us there and gave us a going over. We didn't have any papers for the car that I know about except the registration card & that doesn't prove anything. Finally we duplicated the signatures on our drivers licenses & that satisfied him even tho that really doesn't prove a thing. Also we stayed all nite in Raton, throwing our bedding down along side the road in the ditch. Very few towns seem to have free camping grounds. From Raton we drove to the Haywards. At a distance there place looks like just any other shanty but once inside it is really very nice. All the buildings are one story & the houses are faced with split logs bark side out. At right angles to the main house Grandfather Hayward has his quarters built in the same way. The rest of the lot is enclosed by a hedge & a shop at one end. The grass inside is as nice as any Omaha home & they have a few young trees that set things off very nicely. Also the have a small private
