May 26, 1936 Dear Uncle Chas: Thank you for the neckties you and Auntie Kate sent me. I can always use a cravat. Our banquet was held last nite and it was a huge success. Counting the faculty there were 201 in attendance. Each member of the class had to "kick in" $1.75 but I guess it was worth it. The girls were all in formals but the boys paraded in just their regular suits. When they asked me to be toastmaster they said I would be competent because I had some subtle humor. I was afraid it might be too well hidden but every thing went off nicely. In fact, with all due modesty, I had them under the tables half the time. I got off to a good start and things "broke" just right so as to make my cracks effective. I started off by saying that even after this bounteous banquet, with our esteemed class president on my left, I can still honestly say I have eaten next to nothing. I wish very much that you might have been present. You would be surprised at the talent in this school. All the after dinner speeches were very clever. Nothing lagged at any time. I appreciate
