portaging is much like an army experiences after marching 1/2 day to a certain point then being told they had made a mistake and would have to return over the same road. The second day we portaged to Partridge, across Partridge, up Nixon Creek a little way until it became too shallow and then a portage of a mile and half where we could put in again. Both Bob & I portaged the whole mile & 1/2 without a stop. If you don't think carrying a 90 or 100 lb canoe that far isn't a job your mistaken. While winding up Nixon creek every now and then we would scare up a duck or two. Also in Nixon lake as we laboriously poled our way thru wild rice - about like rowing across a football field in a heavy dew - a duck would occasionally
