September 13th, 1938 Dear Ben: Your first college letter from home will be as brief as your sojourn, to date. When I came in this afternoon Mrs. Long handed me the enclosed keys, saying that they had been picked up from the dining room floor soon after your departure. Believing them to be keys to your or Marney's baggage I hasten to send them on. As I have mentioned heretofore, you will slip easily into a new environment and into a somewhat different manner of living, to which you will adjust yourself readily and will like no end. You are on the threshhold of one of the most interesting and fruitful periods of your life and I know that you will take advantage of all the opportunities, scholastic and social, maintaining the while your very sound foundation of moral and spiritual training. The very best achievements will be yours. Try to keep in touch with Marney during the next few weeks and let me know how she fits herself into the Ames scheme. She impresses me as being self reliant and capable, but she is a long way from home. Bette and Elsie, as well as yourself, will have some of the family dropping in now and then, so it can't get lonesome for you. Please write with as much regularity as seems practicable, even if only a few paragraphs. Fond love Pop
