[Oct. 1, 1938] Saturday Dear Family:- Thank you both - pappy and mammy - for your fine encouraging letters. As I hope you have already have guessed I am not in the least downhearted or discouraged. I suppose that most of all I am surprised - surprised that after all these years - a veteran, practically - that I didn't rise to the occasion when the "chips" were down, when so many of my friends were there to see me. Well, it was another experience - an experience out of which I should gain much. So we will let it ride at that. I rather hope that you have saved the unfavorable newspaper comment along with the rest. If
