COPY The State University of Iowa IOWA CITY Office of the President December 5, 1941 Dear Nile: I had expected to tell you good-by before you left for service, I understood that you were to be here until December 1, but evidently you left earlier than that. There was an editorial in the Daily Iowan Wednesday morning, reprinting an editorial in the Mason City Globe-Gazette written by Earl Hall and quoting part of your Armistice Day address in Iowa City. I am enclosing a copy. The men of my generation enlisted for the duration in World War I, but they forgot to enlist for the duration of the peace. That was a mistake. Peace no less than war is a dynamic thing. Unless guided and directed, it breaks down. I hope we shall not repeat our earlier mistake. You have enlisted for the duration. You have always done your part well, and you will do it well again. We shall look forward to your return when the peace comes, and I hope that you will be enlisted in that, too, for the duration. Sincerely yours, Virgil M. Hancher Mr. Nile Kinnick 5024 Hamilton Omaha, Nebraska H/w
