Correspondence concerning the commemoration of Nile Kinnick, 1941-1997

Dear Paul,
'Pleased to receive picture of your residence on a nice sunny
winter day.  Of course, I remember troding your street, lo,
those many years ago coming and going to the campus and other
destinations.  And, your home is so "Iowan", sturdy, timeless,
snug, and stately like the trees nearby.  In a word, charming.
Takes me back to those college days.  ('Have only returned to
the campus once, during the spring/summer break when all had
left . 'Wanted to show Susan where Nile and I lived in the
Quadrangle and the pathways as we went about our daily activities, mostly on west campus.)
In response, am enclosing several photo-copies of long ago,
and more recent, to give you an idea about us.  First, the
"cousins" includes Elizabeth Van Meter (married Nile Sr. after
Frances died), next right Louise with Nile, Jr.'s arm around
her shoulder, then Portia, Kingsley, Ben and Clarke Van Meter.
Taken in Adel about 1923.  It's a "keeper" which Louise would
not permit going to the NCK Collection.  Perhaps one day?
Next, Louise and Theodora leaving the Pi Phi house in Ames.
Louise one left.  Both lovely ladies.  Other two are group
picts of family at Sun Valley (very dim) and in front of our
Sky Mountain home, also dim. Perhaps I can come up with better
quality later.  Have been hesitant to send any Hobbs stuff
as not germane to the Kinnick Collection, but this is mainly
for your edification.
But here's some real Collection material too.  (Found these
in a box in garage overhead.)  First, letter fm Nile to Chas.
Clarke - 8-27-42.  Next, BenK. to Chas. WE may draw our own
interpretations of what is behind their words.  Third, NCK to
Chas C. 3-2-43 on war progress.  (Would send these direct to
Bob McCown but think you might like to see first since some
original material.)  Sorry, my earlier responses lacked completeness.  Bob acknowledged you had sent him the last items
I sent.
Address to Bellevue 98006 due post office actions.  Our house
remains rooted to original site.  Also, Bellevue easier to spell
then Issaquah.
'Have wondered what to do about the "Flight Jacket" from Pensa-
cola.  My first option, on everything, is family, i.e., would
they want it, what could they do with it. etc. At moment I will
keep those things which need to be cared for and until it becomes clear the best disposition after discussions.  Anything
close to 'trashbin' disposal will go to Museum at Pensacola -
good, bad, or indifferent.  Some researcher could weave a good
story about the cadets, individual and/or collectivly.
