In re: De Vere I mentioned at squadron one day that a friend of mine was a prisoner of the Italians, whereupon someone remarked with dry humor, "what a humiliating situation." That is rather funny in the abstract, but not so where one's relatives are concerned. However, I imagine notice of prisoner status was a welcome relief to the Thompsons after hearing that he was missing in action. Well, the war continues and according to tonight's radio the Russians have launched yet another offensive, this time in the North from around Leningrad. What a magnificent job they are doing! If we could somehow clean the Germans out of Tunisia in the next couple of months and attack the continent, the Axis might crumble. Imagine they will try one more big offensive. Might strike through Spain, for which I trust we are making every preparation. Note that Nimitz speaks of important naval action in the Pacific this summer. Very likely I'll get in on it. Will try to draw down on a few of those Japs the way you use to knock those ducks. Flying weather has been pretty good the past couple of weeks. Possibly we will pull out on schedule (latter part of March) after all. Yours, Nile P:S: By the way where in whack is Prairie Hills?
