Nile Kinnick correspondence, March-October 1943

who can't write or speak any better than an eighth grader is a sad spectacle. Strive for interest, continuity, intelligent choice of words, clever phrasing, good, strong sentences. Watch your punctuation and avoid repetitious conjunctions. You have to write and you have to speak if you expect to improve Take advantage of every reasonable opportunity. Lastly, you have improved, and not just a little. Keep at it.
This afternoon all four squadrons joined in a combined operation. Donning our oxygen masks 20 fighters went up to 18,000 feet and escorted 24 dive bombers, 12 torpedo bombers on a simulated attack on a carrier. ( A small island off the coast served as our target. ) It really was quite a sight, over fifty planes in concerted action. Wish you could have seen us. It was a lot of fun.
Appreciated very much the picture you enclosed. It appears you are beginning to fill out some. Trust you will develop some power in your back and arms, particularly if you are planning to indulge in some manual labor under foreign employers.
