Wednesday April 14, 1943 Dear Folks, The imminence of our departure date has prompted the skipper to grant three day leave for each of us at scheduled intervals. I debated quite some time on how I should spend mine. Much as I wanted to get home I decided the uncertainty of air travel and the length of time necessary by train weighed too heavily on the negative side. Your earlier suggestion that one of you might come out here was given full consideration, but, frankly, I felt that if I couldn't see the whole family, around the home hearth I'd rather pass the idea entirely. Consequently, I accepted the alternative of three care-free days in New York City, getting back just last night. I had a fine time, but I was alone; and happiness unshared is like a picture without those colors which give it warmth and meaning. Give a man one close friend, tried and true, and he is fortified against the world; make that friend a woman and there are no heights he cannot scale. Sunday afternoon, I heard Marian Anderson at the Metropolitan opera house. I was lucky to get a ticket, for they were all sold out, except for standing room, when I presented myself at the window.
