Saturday Dec. 5, 1942 Dear Bob, Glad to hear that you are going into cadet training for lighter-than-air. Believe you will find it a lot of fun and a good education. By the way, did you know that Myron Walker, ex-mayor of Iowa City, was a lighter than officer during part of the last war. He called me up while I was at Norfolk and asked me over for a visit one evening. He was wearing a pair of wings a little different in design than any I had ever seen before, and in answer to my query told how he got them. It turned out that he is in charge of all de-gausing work at the Norfolk Naval base. Rather, a big job. I gathered, and he had just received the rank of full commander to go with it. Evidently you have gotten acquainted with right people or you never would have gotten your age waivered. You may be 29 and feel like 21, but before they get through with you at Chapel Hill you'll think you are 49. If you use common sense you should come out in good shape, but don't be too eager about it. These Navy muscle men will kill you if you give them a chance. Better make the most of that week at home. If the lighter-than-air branch of the service is anything like our carrier training group your days of liberty are over. We not only are flying on Sundays, we don't
