Sunday Dec. 20, 1942 Dear George, Once again I am settled in Norfolk and not at all happy about it. The place is just too darn big, too crowded, too hard to get around if things were to break just right I might get out of here in two or three days. All that is required is one or two hours of field carrier landings (bounce drill) and eight satisfying landings on the ship. However, the charger, a converted merchantmen, which is being used for qualification isn't very fast, and if the natural wind isn't of a certain velocity then it can't get enough wind across its deck to permit fighter landings. Furthermore, they don't have near enough planes to do the job right. Lastly, we had quite a snowstorm today with lots of wind which may hold up bounce drill for awhile. So you see I many be around here a week or more. I told of the good time I was having in Greensboro in my last letter, but I don't think I said much about the town, itself. It is the prettiest and most prosperous city I have yet seen in the South. Even the colored folk looked happy and well fed. The shopping district was clean and modern looking and the residential section was beautiful. The many fine trees-oak and pine-really dressed up the place. In many ways it reminded me of Cedar Rapid or Waterloo. Truly, I spent a leisurely two days, completely free of responsibility and care.
