3 to improvement of his vocabulary, use of words, and sentence structure. Undoubtedly, he will. As yet I have received neither the box of candy from you nor the fruit cake from Mrs. Louden, but they should come in any day now. Wasn't it thoughtful of the Loudens to remember me? I hope you write them a note of appreciation. They are exceptionally fine people. You and pap would like them a lot. If you ever get into Fairfield look them up. Yes, Whitney Martin has been most generous. I trust Stanley Davies hadn't written in such a vein that Martin felt obliged to answer in kind. The J in J.R. Mortimer stand for James. Glad to see he is a corporal(sp). Can't think of anything nicer than getting hung up in Omaha the way John Rushlau did. It was very nice of him to call on you. Please extend my greetings & best wishes at the next opportunity. I bet old Sumner was glad to get back. Shouldn't be surprised if I run into him in Pearl Harbor sometime. But that won't be for quite awhile yet. I'm not sure just what you finally decided to do for my Xmas present. It occurs to me that in making a counter suggestion I sounded ungrateful and unmindful of your loving thoughtfulness. Now at a loss over what to say I can only assure you whatever you do will make me happy and proud. Haven't see a Flight Jacket yet, but those who have, say it is pretty fine. Hope you enjoy it. Have just started a book entitled The Story of Reconstruction (1865-77) by R. Selph Henry. I fear my reading on this period has been sadly lacking. Would you please purchase for me out of my funds this book and also a volume titled The Story of the Confederacy by the same man.
