Wednesday Jan. 13, 1943 Dear Folks, Have been away on a ferry trip for the past few days, getting back around noon yesterday. Ten of us took a Navy transport to Norfolk last Friday night where we were to pick up some new F4F-4s for our squadron. We would have gotten started back the next day had it not been for the inefficiency and apathy of the acceptance & transfer personnel. Our planes were supposed to be ready to fly away, but unhappily such was not the case. They were all covered with snow and ice, the oleos were down, and the accessory gear hadn't been packed in behind. By four-thirty they were ready for 30 minutes acceptance hops, but it was too late to start north. Bad weather kept us in Norfolk until Monday around three oclock. Rather than follow the airways up to Wash. Philly, and then to New York, we cleared direct through Cape May, N.J. where we landed briefly for a weather check. We pulled into Floyd Bennett field around five-fifteen and decided to stay the night. F.B. is a Navy airport located at the south-western tip of Long Island in the Brooklyn area.
