Jan. 14, 1943 Thurs. nite 2020 Dear Bob, And now I really have the red ass! Today the exec announced that we no longer had the privilege of choosing our days off. Henceforward, all liberty would be designated from his desk. The posted schedule indicates my next day of respite to be Friday, Jan. 22. In short my letter of optimism written last night was a bit premature. It now appears that the possibility of our getting together depends on whether you can manage to get your liberty on a day that coincides with mine. It is about four and a half hours from here to New York by train. If I could catch the Navy transport I might make it around seven pm on the 21st, otherwise it would be around 10:30. Let me know whether you think we can make contact. We"ll have plenty of time to hash it over by mail. After the 22nd my liberty day will come every eighth day.
