Saturday Feb. 13, 1942 Dear Folks, I had night flying yesterday for the second time, since I joined this squadron. It was a beautiful evening - clear and cold, and no clouds to obstruct the much appreciated light from the moon and stars. Everything went off smoothly, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Every phase of my flying seems to be progressing satisfactorily except gunnery, and I expect to gain the word on it very soon. On Thursday I was in New York again. I called Ellie at the Barclay around 7 AM in the hope of catching her before she went to work. The enthusiasm she expressed when I identified myself made me so very glad that I had phoned. I asked her and her mother who is visiting for a few days to go to lunch with me. However, when I presented myself around noon it was raining so hard that we decided to settle for a snack in Ellie's comfortable little apartment which she shares with two other Waves. It must have been quite a relief to Mrs. White to find her daughter so wonderfully situated. Even for three girls the
