Saturday night Feb. 20, 1943 Dear Folks, Well, I went to New York again this week. Although I usually have a pretty good time, I always wonder on my return whether it was worth it; the train ride is so tedious and the actual time spent in the city is so short. Our flight came down from its last hop on Wednesday about two oclock. Bill Reiter, who also had decided to spend his liberty in New York, borrowed Burrough's car, and we rushed to pick up his wife and catch the 3:29 at Kingston. Reiter and Burroughs share a big country home just a few miles from Kingston, so we weren't guilty of any serious violation of the ban on driving. Just a couple of miles from their house we had quite a startling experience. We were driving along about 30 miles an hour when all of a sudden there was a big bang like a blowout and flame leaped up from around the fire wall and smoke began to pour out from around the hood. Bill hastily applied the brakes, and we jumped out. Remembering a similar difficulty mother and I had near Dexter many years ago, I immediately suggested smothering the fire with a blanket.
