Thursday AM Oct - 8, 1942 Dear George, I write to correct some false impressions I may have left with you. During the past couple of years you have heard me give expression to much humorous cynicism concerning the value of hard work and a concentrated, sustained effort to develop one's abilities to their fullest. Those remarks were occasioned by a somewhat natural reaction to a prolonged period of all-out physical and mental effort at college. I trust you weighed them in their proper proportion and remained skeptical, for I repeat now what you have heard many times before: a strong desire and unflagging effort
