I am trying to make is that it is much better to land in the trees than spin in trying to stretch a glide or make an impossible turn at low altitudes. So if your motor does konk out, shave that old nose over at once and keep your airspeed. Take a look around for clearings and use your small field procedure if possible. If there is nothing within reach head it into the wind and set her down on top of, or in, the trees as slowly as you can. As long as a pilot doesn't spin in you'd be surprised what a beating his plane will take and leave him unhurt. I've had occasion to observe the results of those who spin in the past couple of days, and it isn't pleasant. I'm not trying to frighten you, but just to give you some practical advice. Don't anticipate that will ever have to make a forced landing. However, you might as well have this in mind. Might add that motor failure is very rare. It is usually uncontrolled airspeed and poor judgement that brings the trouble. All these things I am telling you are the commonsense footsteps a man should follow in an emergency. But man's real protection lies in knowing God's everpresent
