Sunday aft. June 7, 1942 Dear People, On Thursday of this week I checked out of squadron three. it was a rather tough day on which to check. There was a strong east wind blowing, lots of low clouds & fog, and in general rough and nasty--quite similar to weather in which a man would have to use his instruments out of necessity. I manged to fly my check pilot a pretty decent hop although it was quite difficult to stay on the beam all the time because of the drift. All in all I was fairly well satisfied with my work in this squadron. It is a relief to be out of it, however, for it was tiring work. That evening the Marine Board Selection met and interviewed all applicants. I felt quite confident of being selected, my qualifications seeming to measure up with the standards I understand the Marines demand. However, by their own admission
