Friday Feb. 6, 1942 Dear Folks; I suppose you will want to hear about our trip down here. It is apt to be a rather uninteresting narrative, but I'll do the best I can. My last, and very pleasant, date with Merle found me getting in around 3 AM. Nonetheless, in the hope of getting an early start for New Orleans, I piled out of bed at 5:45 with the rest of the boys. It was a vain hope, however. The powers that be kept us waiting around for our traveling orders until 2:45 that afternoon. Finally, all red tape was complied with, and we pulled out for the southland--Pettit, I, and two other boys from our section. We followed #71 to #35 to #13 and into Springfield, Mo. for supper. Out of there we followed #60 to Willow Springs, where we picked up #63. It was on this road that the map shows that innocuous looking strip of gravel 50 miles long. Well, sad to relate, a gravel road in Arkansas is not the same animal it is in Iowa even though a state road. Frankly, it was one of the worst highways I have ever
