3 U.S. Naval Air Station PENSACOLA, FLORIDA experiences in this war. It was excellent propaganda and stirred the blood of us all, I know. He was most unassuming and barely referred to his own much publicized exploits. Here is a statement he made in a humorous sort of way which is typically American: "there I was up there, all alone with about 9 bombers; there wasn't much else I could do but try to shoot them down." What a contrast to what an Axis ace would probably have said! Thank you all for the telegram on Mother's Day. It was nice of you to think of me. Gus, you needn't send the sandblaster, but keep it around,
