The State University of Iowa Iowa City College of Law Office of the Dean August 16, 1940 Mr. Nile Kinnick Hinman House Northwestern University Chicago, Illinois Dear Nile: In accord with our telephone conversation, I will extend you time in which to register, until October 14. This is done only in exceptional cases under our rule, but I think your case is clearly within the classification. The first two weeks in Law School are usually important in getting started, but I think if you come here immediately after your game on the 13th of October, that the first two weeks could be made up. In ordinary cases I would advise against it, but in view of the situation as I understand it with you, I feel fully justified in granting the extension of time, and I feel that you can make up the work and still do very good work. I will be glad to spend some extra time with you at the beginning to help get you started, and to help having the work made up. I think other members of the faculty would be glad to do likewise. I am very much interested in. seeing you do very high scholastic work in the Law School when you enter, because I know what that will mean to you in the future, and I feel that you have the capacity to do the best of Law work. From the financial standpoint I can see how this would be a tremendous help to you and would finance the whole of your three years in the Law School. Knowing that you are dependent on your own earnings to go through Law School, this would of course mean a great deal to you. It would let you devote time to your studies without the worry of financial pressure. In this I feel justified in granting the extension. You have undoubtedly visited with Eddie Anderson and with your parents. You will of course give full consideration to the advice of both. I do wish to make this statement, although I know you have it in mind. The professional athletic career is very attractive, and it may be hard to break away from it after you have started. The trouble with it is that it is not long lived, and you should think of the
