Omaha, Nebraska September 17, 1940 Sear SB: It was thoughtful of you to consider the possibility of any repercussions on me of your plan to take an active part in the (willkie rally) programs at Iowa Falls on the 27th of September. The results will all be favorable, I am sure, and there is no reason to believe that the response will be anything but pleasure in the opportunity and pride in the result. No, there will be no unfavorable reflection on my position here. Sunday I drove Ben back to Ames and had time only to glance at the Des Moines paper before leaving. Coming home I stopped at Atlantic for an hour and Ruth called my attention to the report that you would introduce Willkie at the Iowa Palls meeting. That is fine, and I know that you will do a good job. My only suggestions doubtless are high on your list already; they are, prepare carefully and speak slowly. As we discussed before you left, I believe that this fall presents a good opportunity for you to be of some service and to make contacts that will be valuable later, and the opportunity cones only once in four years for national affairs and once in two for state affairs. It looks like a real opportunity this year. But you should be careful that obligations at the University are not toomuch interfered with.. Congratulations on the whole thing. You will be smart, I know, in recognizing that there is more than appears on the surface. The pressure is terrific and you must protect yourself from all angles. If you should decide that you want to come down to Omaha on the night of the 28th, drop us a card and George and I could drive up to Sioux City for the game, unless you have other transportation with you. Mother leaves this morning on her eastern junket and won't be home until some time around the 3rd of October. It will be a grand trip and she expects to have a lot of fun. We shall not be able to write to her at any time except that mail sent to The Publishing House In Boston will be called for. They expect to leave Boston about the 27th. The schedule will include Bangor, Maine, as the farthest east, then down the coast to Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, then westward. By the way, probably the only football game that will be on our program this year will be the Iowa-Nebraska contest. Could you manage three ducats for us. I am not sure that mother will want to go on Saturday aft, but she might. Love Pop
