Omaha, Nebraska October 3, 1940 Dear Chas: (Clarke) Thanks for your kindness in sending me the picture from the Tribune. It is a better one than appeared in the Register and will make a nice contribution to the book. I do not see the Tribune at all and therefore am grateful for such items as you save for me. The Register is taken daily by one of the boys in the office and I usually see it during the noon hour, but accasionally it is difficult for me to get a copy for clipping, The need is not very acute these days, tho. I noted your piece in the Register on the necessity of making a Christian out of Hitler. There is an acute need there and quite evidently somebody will have to do the job. If that is done I believe the rest of the Dead End Kids will come into line without further delay. Here is hoping that Britain will be able to effect the transformation, with such material help as we can give her. I should hate to see this country embroiled in another war over the European situation, which is rapidly taking on the aspects of a world situation. The mistake was made years ago by all of the democracies in not polishing up the big stick, and it may be that we shall be obliged to demonstrate the use of said stick. Moral suasion is sometimes of no use unless the other fellow realizes that you can back it up. Yours
