Saturday morning, October 26, 1940 Dear SB. Enclosed are copies of the letters written to Dad Schroeder and Christy Walsh about the extra trophies. If Christy comes thru I shall be a little surprised, but It is worth the effort. My thought is that the showing may as well be complete as not. It just seems to me that the folks here will be greatly interested in seeing all of them and that they are entitled to a look-see. I believe that your suggestion about the All Star sweater instead of the All American is a good one, and very likely we shall work it that way. Ben (Gibson of Neb.Clothing.) andd two of his window men are coming out Wednesday afternoon, late, to see what is available and to plan the display. About the tickets for the Nebraska game, please save the four; mother has said that she will not go but George and I will use two and Mrs. Christie and her husband will use the others. They will pay for theirs if you will inform me of the price. She was one of my invaluable assistants until she resigned on the first of Septemberto devote herself to a new house that they are building. He works for Swift, I wonder if you heard John L. Lewis on the radio last night? It was the most thrilling political speech that I have yet heard in any campaign. He has never been one of my heros but when a man will go as far as he did, in throwing his political and labor leadership future into the balance, I'11 say he is going farther than any other man I have yet listened to. The air is full of speeches every evening, and will be until election day, but I don't expect to be thrilled again like I was last evening. I am anxious to see how the papers will comment on that. It may be the shot that sends FDR's badly bogging flagship to the bottom. It would have been interesting to have heard Tobin's rebuttle of Lewis' speech and Ickies vitriolic vituperations, but I turned off after hearing Lewis. The man must have something who can pledge himself like that, when it seems certain that no pledges had been made to him by Willkie. The results will be worth watching. No doubt you are keeping in mind that your car will need attention before long. Thinner grease must be put into the transmission and differential, and a lighter oil should be used during the cold months, possibly about a 20 grade. Some anti-freeze should go into your radiator anytime now. Prestone is the best, and most expensive. I have been using it lately as it can be saved from year to year. Other cheaper products are available but until this year they have been of alcohol extraction and they evaporate before the water does, often weakening the solution dangerously. But I have noted some advertised this fall which do not evaporate. Better consult your favorite garage man or station operator. Be sure that the thermostats are in the hose connections; otherwose your motor won't warm up and the heater also will be ineffective. I am putting a heater and a new set of tires on the sedan after mother and George return. Last week I had the brakes relined and Mitch is giving themotor a tuning, so it will be in good shape for this winter. Iowa has a tough row ahead in football this year; one that will offer ample opportunity to show whether iron is a lasting quality. Every outfit will be waiting for Iowa this year, but the same spirit that carried her thru last year will still win some important contests. While I don't expect quite the same results as last year I believe they should finish in the first division with a very creditable record. Please write when you can, even short ones. Love Pop
