The State University of Iowa Iowa City Department of Athletics Office of the Director Division of Physical Education Thursday 1:00 PM 12-12-40 Dear Family: I expect you are wondering if I am still down here at the U. I don't believe that I have written since Thanksgiving--and incidentally I'll give thanks again today for not having to play in the All-Star game this year against the Bears--did you see what they did against Washington--almost unbelievable--there must be something wrong in Denmark somewhere. Have been busy as the very dickens for the past three weeks. Have spoken at Waterloo and at the Athletic Banquet down here--and also fulfilled my "command" performance at Mitchell--Monday night I go to Cedar Rapids to talk to a group of Ymcaers. Last Sat. we had a test in Remedies--the first one this year--it was true -false and only counts a fifth. I don't have any idea how I did but am sure that I won't be heading the class. --and I say that with sarcastic feeling. I either haven't gotten the hang of this stuff yet or I am in a really tough field becuase I feel in the dark a good deal of the time. m planning to get things straightened out during vacation. Would like to use the Omaha U. law library some if I can arrange it--possibly pap can make some arrangements. Monday I have an outline in Contracts due--some job to get it whipped in shape--it will be far from a masterpiece but I can't see the efficacy of them anyhow--because I am so busy I am forced to rationalize a little on this tudying--but I was forced to do that in LA and manged to get along alright. I have a talk to make in Webster City on Mon. night the 23rd so I won't be home before the 24th--will let you know as soon as I have made definite plans--I suppose I will meet Ben in DM and bring him on home with me unless he feels that he would like to get home sooner. Have had about three dates during the whole of the school year thus far and except for the weekend down at Notre Dame have been busy at something or other pertaining to my job or school work over each Sat. and Sun. Doesn't seem to suit me just exactly but then there doesn't seem to be any alternative and I am thankful that I am able to do all that is required. My roommate has his dad's car down here until Xmas facation. It is a big four door chrysler with fluid drive, radio, heater, etc.--mighty fine--would be much, much better if we had time to use it for something except go over to class and back. Cerainlh did appreciate an article in Readers Digest entitled oo much Going on--maybe you read it. Incidentally thanks very vmuch for theclippings and quotations you have sent on different occasions--I always enjoy them. I don't know what the whack this dude Roosevelt is doing--at the time of his election I didn't feel so bed about his being re-elected feeling thathe would go to work and get some aid to Britain--but evidently everything is bogged down and nothing is happening nor is our plane production isn't any better th n it was--absolutely reprehensible--all he can do is make fine phrases, I guess--50,000 airplanes, my foot--500 would be more like it--he shouldn't even need bait for the suckers down there in the Caribbean or wherever he is or has been. Boy, I am going to welcome this vacation with open arms--don't feel tired at all but sure am fed up with looking up at these casebooks all the time. might be alright to sleep past 6.30 some morning too. Had a letter from the clothier in Fairfield to whom pap sent the All-Star suit--he sure id appreciate it --mighty nice of you to send it, Gus. Tell Geo that I think I surely will be able to get in a few games of basketball this vacation. And with no attempt at sarcasem mother, don't line me up with any of your or Mrs. Weavers friends for any high falootin party where they stay up all night and have breakfast together in the cold gray dawn. Much as I might like to go out I'll pick both the gal and the occasion--possibly by now Geo. could line me up with some little beetle. What do you think I shou.d do about this premium on that life ins. Hobbs gave me last year, Gus. --better give me your advice quick it is due soon--I doubt if there is any use keeping it do you--that particular policy anyhow--haven't heard from Bob for along time He didn't hall in the Sound did he. Well, I am running out of materi l if I had any when I started and it it time to get on the books again anyhow--Nile
