The State University of Iowa IOWA CITY Friday nite (9:30 2-15-'41 Desr Family: Thank you so very, very much for the Valentine box, mother. It was so very thoughtful of you! And full of the best things I can think of. It makes me very ashamed that I haven't written for such a long time. My excuse as per usual is lack of time. I spent all last weekend getting our appellant brief ready for our freshman argument starting n week from Tuesday. I am arguing with my roommate against a couple of dudes who are fairly sharp I think. So if I don't get another letter off right a way you can charge it up to the impending argument. Also spring football is going to start next Tues. so that will add to my obligations. Well, since I wrote last many things have happened--not much of consequence but the days hare been full. The tests are all out of the way and as yet the grades haven't come out yet. I don't feel that I did extraordinarily well-- as a matter of fact the grades may ve quite average but nonetheless I felt that I knew the material very well and that is the imp. thing. I also have made a couple of speeches--one in Muscatine on last Monday night at a father and son banquet and the one at Waterloo at the Millers convention which I may have already mentioned. I also took a little trip to Chicago which I MAY have omitted to mention in my last letter. Tests ended on Sat. noon so I took off for Chi to see Aunt Mary, of course, and didn't get back until Monday night. I left Chi. on Monday morning and drove to Waterloo in time for the afternoon speech I mentioned avove. Miss Peairs is quite a remarkable girl and were there not such a disparity in our ages she might have something on her hands. Haven't any other definite dates for speeches lined up --tho there is a very good possibility that I shall go over to Freeport, 111. for a talk on March 3rd. Spring vacation starts April 9th I think, but am not sure will in all probabiltity come home tho it is a very short respite--and then again something might comeup. Did I write you that I had another letter from that dude in the East who wants me to be companion to the Fords, Rockefellers, etc.---I'd refuse if it would turn out to be just a Du Pont and an Astor. He said that he hadn't expected me to make up my mind right sway but that he wanted me to go and for me to b rush up on my Spanish for we would spend a couple of weeks in Mexico. Said he would be out in the spring to see me--I think I' l try to do a little checking on him too. Just returned from the Ia.-Minn. track meet--don't enjoy them much--nor basketball either anymore. Have played a little squash now and then--a lot of fun--will take it up a little more seriously sometime, maybe. Looks like Hitler is going to try to put on the big push soon now--its going to be tough going this spring and summer--god old England--boy how they can hang on. Chruchill is marvelouss --heard him talk last Sun.--he is wonderful . When he lowers his voice for emphasis it makes my bakc tingle. Am proud of Willkie and dis gusted with the majoirity of the Repeublican party --they better snpa out of it or they won't be anymore. Some sort of parliamentary system will eventually show up out of this--no longer can this country afford to have two parties whose avowed principle is always to stand for the exact opposite of the other regardless of what the stand is. Speaking of England did 1 tell you about my Eng. bull dog. --I bought him aabout a month ago. He is cast in bronze and about 4 or 5 inches.hish. He is noble, defiant, strong, persevering in every line--makes a nice piece for my desk. About time for bed so will sing off--thanks always for the clippings, goodies, etc. that you send every now and then--love to all--it also gives my back a tingle now andthen to realize what a fine family I have been blessed with--would like to see alllof you Bear down George--and get hot if they ever let you in a game again.
