Sunday noon 4.20.'41 Dear Family; From now on I am going to try to write to you more often. That means that my letters will be more brief but I think their frequency (I hope) and improved skill of expression will make up for their brevity. It is hard to believe that I returned to school just last Tuesday. It seems that I have been back for much longer. Everything went off very well in Atlantic. The speech was well received and I had a fine visit with the Bices. I got into Adel about 11:30 PM and got up the next morning about 7 oclock in time to have breakfast and a short visit with grandma before starting out for Iowa City. On the way down I picked up a boy by the name of Fox who is going to school at Chicago U. but lives in Des Moines. He said his dad went to Ames and that he knew you, Gus. Do you recall him? Our final exams start on May 12th and finish on the 21st. Those nine days represent the period of final reckoning for this year. I feel rather confident at this period and should be all set if I get as much studying in as I plan. I am not going up the to the Relays this year because of the necessity of study and for the same reason I turned down a chance to speak in Ames before the inter-fraternity group. But from the 21st of May until June 1st I plan to get in lots of golf. Jimmy George is in town again this weekend. His draft number has been called but he got a short deferment until he could find out if the Marine Corps would take him for which he applied several weeks ago. I wrote Hobbs today to find out what his number is and just mentioned that if we had to go about the same time it might be a good idea if we would volunteer just before we would be called and thus get into the same camp. Should we do that it would be to our advantage to try to get into a special branch such as the Marines, Navy, or Air Serice I imagine. I wrote this fellow in the East that I couldn't go with him. I was prompted to refuse him for several reasons. First, I don't seem to want to go too badly anyway; secondly, he plans to get quite a bit of publicity including newsreels and I can't see myself being held up to the public as taking it easy with a bunch of rich boys when I possibly should be in the army. Tell G orge that the spring is no time to weaken on the studies. The final exams are the "payoff". Don't let apathy rob you of the reward of sustained effort at this late date. Neither do you need fear that you will "choke". Fruition is the very essence of healing or right demonstration and it can't escape you if you but realize that as perfect Law. I feel fine these days and know you all do also. Love to all, Yours, S.B.
