The Cedar Rapids Gazette Cedar Rapids, Iowa Mr. Mile Kinnick, Esq., My Oratorlcally-incllned friend: Cedar Rapids, Iowa Jan. 22, 1940. Enclosed, if I don t forget it, is the clipping to which you have reference. Pardon the delay in forwarding same. The space which will be left vacant is reserved for the customary alibis. In other words, I just forgot the thing. As you rather delicately infer. my coverage of your Independence speech (which I did not hear, incidentally) apparently did not meet with your whole-hearted approval. I'm sorry, if I did seem to stretch the thing out a bit but, as you would be the first to concede, the subject matter was of a nature which could not be butchered up and still covered in an intelligent manner. You more than anyone else should realize at this late date that I am not one to do things in any but an intelligent manner. I might add that there has been a considerable difference of opinion on that score, notably on the part of the men who cooperate so half-heartedly in the matter of paying my salary. At the moment everything is under control and the story on your Independence speech aided materially. No one of your kindly disposition could cherish hard feelings, knowing that the welfare of a small but lusty family of four was aided and abetted by the thing which promised to wreck a beautiful friendship. Seriously, after I read your speech in full, I felt that a lesser summation in print would have been unfair to your own efforts and to the readers as well, most of whom are interested in your welfare and appreciate your efforts as do we who know you best. Had a nice letter recently from your brother Ben and am slowly getting around to the business of forwarding him a print of the Notre Dame touchdown play which ran in the Gazette. We had an especially good shot of the play, better, I think, than any of the other papers. But that's a natural reaction, I suppose, and open to argument. Congratulations on the eastern trip. You did swell. As always, Tait Cummins
