[April 12, 1940] Nile C. Kinnick Iowa City, Iowa Friday 4 - 13 [?] not such a good family life Dear Family: Thanks for the letter and enclosures, Gus. I just have time to bang off a quick note before I head for the dance. Got back from Northern Iowa just a moment ago. I had planned to talk at Chas. City as I told you in My last letter. Just before I left a fellow got in touch with me about talking at a Jr Ch amber of C meeting on Fri noon in Mason City I agrreed. So it was was City Thurs nite and Mason C Today noon. Picked up 97$ without deducting expenses. My reaction to the Baum deal is much like yours--sounds pretty good but proceed carefully and inquire into some of the seeming anomalies such as Baums flitting about, etc. I shall enclose some information that I had Roy Ralph get for me. Evidently it is tough to find out much about his outfit. I think he must have a very nice little monopoly-- in fact he said as much in one of my telephone conversations with him. One of the many reasons for waiting to talk to Joe Weaver and also one of the reasons that public life and politics don't appeal to me particularly involves the possiblity of home anf family life. A connection with Weaver I think probably lend itlsef to such quite readily and I think there are better opportunities there than mother's letter would indicate--tho of course maybe she has more inside information than I . Anyway I want to have a good serious talk with him and see what he has to say --as I remember it he seemed qute inter ested not so awfully long ago. I am just a little bit afraid that what Baum wants is another salesman like himself. Now I think possibly I could seell pretty welll but this tearing around all over thecountry and not having a chance to settle down doesn't appeal to me. I don't know that that is j8st what he is after but it looks like it. However I sure want to have a talk with him if at all possible. I am not adverse to picking up quick money or just making a lot of money but if it mean sacrificing everything that I enjoy--the simple things of life--I cant see it. What I think I want is to get connected with a good business with a future and harmonious surroundings as to personnel and superiors and learn it from the bottom up. Thus d oing it that way among other things I should have a chance to do some of the reading I want to do before 1 would get to the point where the responsibility would require attention to the business to the exclusion of much other reading. It all sounds rather involved and vague now I presume but if I hang in there pray for guidance I think it will open up the way it should--possibly it will be law I don't know--if so ok but I rather doubt it. I rather think all 1 want is the underlying philosophy which La Guardia you will remember said was the only oworhthile part and old be acquired in three months- Well we will wait and see but act on that Weaver deal as I suggested -- if I am really interested I think Joe will tell me what the possiblities really are. For goodness sake don't push the trophy deal--unless they just grab it up--what I was wondering about was if you would want the blanket and trophies out ht ere while I should have them for pictures for the beloved Christy--that is the reason 1 mentioned them. The other golf clubs are at Grandmas whenever you want them. Yours, Nile Let me know what Weaver says
