I.D.P.A All-State Football Banquet November 28, 1982 In 8 days it will have been 43 years since Nile Kinnick received the Heisman Memorial Trophy as the outstanding football player in the Uniteid States for the year 1939. He was also honored with the Robert W. Maxwell Trophy and the Walter Camp Memorial Trophy for his football skills. He later became the first college athlete since Red Grange to be named the outstanding male athlete of the year. His closest competitors for that honor were Joe DiMagio and Joe Louis. That summer he was the top vote getter for the all-star game, in which he starred. Nile Kinnick died June 2, 1943 when his fighter plane crashed in the Caribbean after an engine failure on a training flight. Many of your parents had not even been borne in 1939. Why should we go so far back in athletic history to choose a football player to talk about when his name would mean nothing to you if the Iowa University Football Stadium hadn't been named in his honor. You are undoubtedly much more interested in the present day professional and college football players and not only know their names but can give details about their athletic prowess. I hope that by the end of my brief remarks you will know Nile Kinnick better and understand why I feel it is important for you to keep the values for which he stood in mind as your prepare to continue your education or enter the main stream of this society.
