-6- ¶ Nile was humble, unassuming and shy. Not once in all of my associations did I hear him brag about his accomplishments. Whatever he did, he wanted to do well, he expected to do well, he did well and accepted his accomplishments as a matter of course. When he sat down like the rest of us to register for lawschool, he said to the young lady that was doing the registering, 'My name is Nile Kinnick". Her answer was, of course, "I know". And his response was a natural shy smile. Nile was concerned about this world, this country this state and college athletics and education. I could give you many examples of his concern and vision but I must try to."stay within my time restraint. On December 24, 1941 Nile wrote in his diary, "What a magnificient job the Russians are doing--What is to keep them from overrunning all of Europe-- What a problem theUnited States will have with communists. Must England the the United States end up fighting that outfit too-- It looks like a pretty rough and rocky road ahead." On January 1, 1942 he wrote: "The year of 1942 will be a critical period for the democracies. Wishful thinking, unfounded optimism won't meet the test. Individually and collectively we must face the future with a grim determination and courageous staying power borne of a confident faith in God and in the destiny of freedom loving nations. OUrs must be a daily resolve to fight through to complete victory whatever the sacrifice."
