Dick Lamb - 2 and economic and racial inequalities cannot be solved in a moment, and in some respects it is best that we make haste slowly, but this truth is basic and is the starting point and foundation on which to build." This comment was about ten years before we began to pass meaningful civil rights legislation. Also, on May 7th, is this comment, "How can any political candidate be really free and independent in thought and policy when he is dependent on wealthy backers for campaighn funds? Is there no practical remedy for this seemingly inescapable situation?" Here again, wasn't it within the past year that Lyndon Johnson suggested using federal money to finance campaighns for national candidates? Dick, would you recognize something like this from Nile, in the entry on May 6th, "A man must never cease growing, developing, looking ahead. Be alert, be vigorous, cultivate the mind and memory continuously -- laugh a lot." And this one on May 13th, "Initiative - is timely action based on sound thinking and a willingness to assume the responsibility." And on Mayl0th again, "A position of leadership and responsibility should mean more work, more sacrifice, not privilege and repose." The May 10th entry includes this, "Flew up among the clouds today. Tall, voluminous cumulous clouds. They were like snow covered mountains, range after range of them. I felt like an Alpine adventurer climbing up the canyons, winding my way between their peaks - a billowing fastness, a celestial citadel." The last entry was on Tuesday, June 1, 1963, and ends with this line, "People must come before profits!!" My suggestion is that you use the longer quote on the first page, if it fits your story. The others are included to illustrate the wide range ofhis thinking and the activity of his mind. There is much more, as he was reading almost continually. Dick, will you please send me a half-dozen copies of your story, as I know that several cousins would like to see it. Best regards Nck-
