May continued all day we gained about a mile distance & slept on our arms all night 10th morning clear fighting commenced at day light Gen Sherman recd an order from Gen McPherson stating that he (McPherson) had joined him on the right & the fighting would be done there we were to fall back & appear to retreat & thus draw the enemy out if possible
